Sustainability

& Impact

We’ve been net zero in our business operations from day dot. That means that from the day we started Local, we’ve committed to running our offices with the planet in mind.

And we’re not just saying it, we’ve been Climate Active carbon neutral certified since 2023.

Our sustainability

& impact goals

We want to leave the planet in a better place than we found it. Creating communities where social and environmental sustainability is a part of everyday life, not an optional extra.

Sustainability is our guiding light when it comes to designing sustainable buildings that can stand the test of climate change. (A light energised by Green Power, of course.)

We consider the climate every step of the way, from site selection where we factor everything from accessibility to public transport so we can reduce reliance on cars, to the materials that we use to construct, to future proofing our buildings against climate related risks.

We are transparent about our sustainability targets and ratings. It sets us up with a clear plan. Ensuring we keep operating in the green, so our planet is too.

5 star Green Star Buildings

All new Local projects will target achievement of a minimum 5 Star Green Star rating. Founded by Green Building Council of Australia in 2003, Green Star is an internationally recognised rating system setting the standard for healthy, resilient, positive buildings and places.

7.5 stars NatHERS rating

Local will work to maintain a portfolio-weighted average NatHERS rating of at least 7.5 Stars under the Nationwide Housing Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS). Meaning less energy is required for you to heat and cool your home. Operation of the NatHERS is administered by the Commonwealth Government on behalf of all Australian State and Territory governments. The latest iteration of the National Construction Code (2022) requires a minimum 7 Star NatHERS rating for all new dwellings, increased from a minimum 6 star rating.

4.5 Star NABERS Energy rating

All new Local projects will target the achievement of a minimum 4.5 Star NABERS Energy rating. This ensures our common areas use minimal energy. So, you can dive right into the solar-heated pool guilt-free. NABERS is the National Australian Built Environment Rating System, an initiative by the government of Australia to measure and compare the environmental performance of Australian buildings and tenancies.

B Corp Certified

Why B Corp? It’s better for business. And means that we’re held to a really high standard of verified performance, accountability, and transparency on factors from employee benefits and charitable giving and supply chain practices.

You can dive a little deeper into it by checking out our B Corp profile on B Lab’s website.

Climate Active

Did you know Australia’s carbon neutral certification is one of the most rigorous in the world? It’s called Climate Active Carbon Neutral Certification, and it’s a voluntary program for organizations to measure, reduce, and offset their greenhouse gas emissions. Kinda like the Olympics for going green.

It also means that all our Climate Active claims undergo independent third-party verification. So, when we make the claim that we’re the gold medal standard in carbon off-setting, you can trust it’s been thoroughly checked and verified by a proper official.

GRESB

We’re a proud participant member of the Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark (GRESB). GRESB is a mission driven, investor led organisation that collects, validates and scores and independently benchmarks ESG data from real estate portfolios globally. Think of it as a yearly census for eco-friendly buildings.

Great Place to Work

Not just a statement, an actual certification! You can even read about why our people think it’s great to work here.

ESG

Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Strategy

Local’s ESG report guides our actions and decisions, ensuring that we have a clear plan, we know when we’re on track (and when we’re not) and they keep us accountable.

As we forge ahead, we’re staying focused on our six key pillars for ESG: Sustainable Buildings, Homes for All, Thriving Communities, Culture and Capability, Safety and Fairness, and Strong Governance.

Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP)

As a developer, owner, and manager of housing projects, it is both our duty and our desire, to recognise and respect the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we build homes for our residents.

We aspire to embed a culture of reconciliation throughout every aspect of our business, setting a strong foundation of respect, collaboration and engagement.
